Low Water Pressure Switch Problems
.Electrical Contacts
-
There are typically two pairs of electrical contacts on the pressure switch. Each set or pair controls one electrical power wire. Generally the power comes from the main panel and is protected by either a circuit breaker or a fuse. A set of corresponding screw terminals is used for the wire connection to the small diameter metal discs or contacts. These screws can become loose and the wires then fall from the terminal. The screws should be checked for tightness on an annual basis. Remove all electrical power before servicing the pressure switch. Often the small metal discs or contacts can become corroded or pitted from over-current use or a constant on-and-off operation. The contacts will have to be cleaned by using either a piece of emery cloth or a small file. There may come a time when the contacts are completely pitted and the entire switch will have to be replaced. This can be identified by a dark black carbon powder surrounding the contacts. This can be caused by a wet environment or improper operation of the pressure switch itself.
