How Automatic Level Control Works in an Amplifier

How Automatic Level Control Works in an Amplifier
Automatic level control (ALC) is a feature built into some audio amplifiers that protects your speakers from being damaged by a signal that is too loud. It can also protect your ears from a sudden, dramatic volume increase.

Function of Automatic Level Control
Automatic level control limits the dynamic range of the audio signal being sent from the amplifier to the speakers. This means that any part of the audio signal louder than a predetermined threshold is reduced automatically. Conversely, ALC also increases the strength of audio that is lower than a certain threshold. The difference between the quietest and loudest volumes is the dynamic range of the audio.

Uses with Automatic Level Control
This type of control is most useful in public address systems, where a sudden increase in volume could be offsetting or even damage listeners' ears. ALC offers the same benefits when used with headphones.

Warning about Automatic Level Control
By reducing the dynamic range of audio, the perceived difference between quiet and loud noises is reduced. In situations where high audio definition is needed, this can hinder performance.
