Liquid Flow Meter

Liquid Flow Meter

Flow Rates of Liquid Flow Meter

  • Flow meters measure the rate at which a liquid moves through a structure (termed liquid flow rate). There are two flow rates that can be measured by a liquid flow meter: volumetric or mass flow rate. Volumetric flow rate is measured in cubic meters per second. Mass flow rate is measured in kilograms per second. Mass flow rate is sometimes measured by directing a fluid through a pair of tubes. The tubes vibrate, producing wave patterns which are measured. Another method for measuring flow rates is the ultrasonic meter. A pair of transmitters is fitted to the termination points on a tube. A short burst of sound travels through the tube, and is measured by the flow meter as it passes through the liquid in the tube. The interference in sound waves passing through the fluid is measured to acquire a flow rate. As well, each transmitter is also a receiver. This means that the time it takes one signal to reach the other transmitter-receiver will determine the flow rate through a particular type of fluid. Using a transmitter-receiver method is useful also as a means of testing the way a fluid flows through another medium, such as a metal or plastic pipe. Generally, ultrasonic flow meters test the velocity in a liquid (particularly useful in waste water management where testing for particles of matter in water is a matter of public health).
